The FIFA World Cup is well under way across 11 US cities — and alongside the football, something else has quietly gone live: the largest counter-drone security operation ever mounted at a civilian event.
The FBI has stationed specially trained counter-drone task forces at every host venue. The FAA has designated stadiums, fan zones, team hotels, and training facilities as strict No Drone Zones, with temporary flight restrictions reaching up to 1,000 feet above ground. Violations carry criminal fines of up to $100,000 and immediate arrest. For the first time in US history, state and local law enforcement have been federally deputised to detect, track, and mitigate drone threats under the SAFER SKIES Act — not just at one venue, but at scale, across an entire nation.
This is not a precaution. It is a turning point.

The question has changed
For years, the drone security conversation centred on whether unauthorised drones would appear at major events. That question has been answered — they will. Every major stadium, parade, and public gathering in recent memory has recorded drone incursions. The NFL logged over 2,300 illegal drone detections in a single season. Thirty unauthorised drones flew over 100,000 spectators at a Super Bowl parade.
